This is the home page of the Iron, Furnace SIEF [Einecs number 265-998-4 CAS number 65996-67-0]. Iron, Furnace is "the metallic substance produced in a blast furnace or direct reduction furnace which contains at least 85% iron." This description covers Blast Furnace Iron (Hot Metal), Pig Iron, Hot Briquetted Iron [HBI] Direct Reduced Iron [DRI], and Direct Reduced Iron Fines (definition updated 2021).
It was concluded that Iron [Einecs number 231-096-4] and Iron, Furnace [Einecs number 265-998-4] can be considered as the same substance for the purposes of REACH and that therefore the two SIEF's should be combined as Iron [Einecs number 231-096-4 CAS number 7439-89-6]. Iron will therefore cover elemental iron, iron produced in a blast furnace or direct reduction plant, iron powders and carbonyl iron. Each form of iron will be considered individually for classification. Click here to read the Iron Platform's Updated Statement on this issue in full.
